Strands & Workshops

Strand Groups

Each afternoon, there are small discussion groups which we call Strand Groups. If you have not done any of them before at Sweatcon, KYLC/Next Gen or AFES National Training Event (NTE), then start with Strand 1 and come back each year to do the next strand:

Strand 1: Understanding & Applying a Bible Passage – adults or youth (yr 10-12)
Strand 2: Biblical Theology: An Overview of the Whole Bible* – adults or youth (yr 10-12)
Strand 3: Thinking Theologically: What the Bible says about…everything!
Strand 4: Effective Leadership
Strand 5: Unpacking a Bible Book (different each year for those who’ve done all other strands)#

*Strand 2 also counts as SRE (scripture) training for Module 5. Just read “God’s Big Picture” by Vaughan Roberts as well & you’ll be credited with RPL (Recognised Prior Learning).

#In Strand 5, we work through a different Bible book indepth each year using the skills from earlier strands. A great way to bring all the strand learning together as well as prepare a book of the Bible for teaching it at the beginning of the year for Bible Study, Youth Group or Kids Church etc.

Workshops

Topics that have to do with what’s happening in the SW.

Electives are back for our Workshop time at Sweatcon2018!
Choose one workshop each day:

Tuesday –

Catholicism
South West Sydney also has very high percentages of people from  Catholic and Orthodox backgrounds. Whilst there are some similarities with us, there are big differences. What are those and how do we share the gospel with them?

Helping people with addiction
Alcohol, drugs, gambling, porn, gaming,…the list goes on and on. How do we recognise then help people with addictions? How do we help and protect those who suffer as a result of those close to them with addictions?

Evangelism
How do we share the message of Jesus in a society now that is anti-christian, multi-ethnic and materialistic? What do we say and how do we say it?

Wednesday –

How does God guide? Part 1
How do you know what God wants you to do with your life? How does God guide us when we need to make the big decisions in life? With so many “voices” out there, how do we figure out God’s voice in guiding us to what he wants us to do?

Islam
With Islam being the fasted growing religion in the South West, it is a fantastic gospel opportunity for us. What is Islam all about and how do we share Christ with Muslim people and reach these people God has brought to us?

Prosperity Gospel
Does God promise to make us happy, wealthy, successful? Does he promise to fulfil our dreams? Does he promise to give us the desires of our hearts if we have enough faith, if we give him enough? Does he promise abundant blessing and life to the full, and what does that mean anyway?

Thursday –

How does God guide? Part 2
How do you know what God wants you to do with your life? How does God guide us when we need to make the big decisions in life? With so many “voices” out there, how do we figure out God’s voice in guiding us to what he wants us to do?

Apologetics
How do you answer those hard questions that people ask us about God and Christianity? How do we defend the faith we believe and why should we anyway?

Predestination
Does God predestine people or do we choose to follow God? If he predestines people, how is that fair, how do we know? How does it affect our faith and life if we are predestined?

Pastor’s Workshop

Wed and Thurs 4:30pm-6:30pm. $30 including dinner for both sessions.
